Taigh Ciúil
Year round · third Friday of the month
This evening of live music takes place in Taigh Chearsabhagh, Lochmaddy on the third Friday of every month. It plays host to local musicians, the UHI music students and visiting artists from the mainland and abroad. Taigh Ciúil is always a good night.
Berneray Week
3rd week July
This is Berneray's festival week and is popular with locals and visitors. Young families enjoy the sports day, treasure hunt and sandcastle competition. In the evenings there are ceilidhs, a traditional Gaelic concert and a beach BBQ. There is also the Berneray 10k with its varied route by lochs, over machair and across the Cockle Beach. The island fills with people and everyone is in festive mode.
The Highland Games
3rd Friday July
This is a great day out in North Uist. It is an opportunity to meet local people and see Highland dancing, hear competitive piping and see local athletes in action. There is always a collection of interesting stalls, fairground rides and the games dance to top it all off.
German Summer School Concert
3rd weekend August
In early August Berneray is host to a music summer school for young German students. After a fortnight, the daily music practice culminates in two concerts of classical and contemporary works.
Harris Mountain Festival
3rd week August
Harris Mountain Festival is a week-long celebration of the mountains and coast of Harris. It includes guided walks, talks, water sports and taster sessions. The Cal Mac summer timetable makes this event very accessible from Berneray.
2-Island Half Marathon
Last Saturday August
This road race starts in Berneray and follows the main road to Lochmaddy. It is a moderate route taking in great views of the islands of Pabbay and Boreray and Lochmaddy with Beinn Lee in the background. It finishes with a welcome lunch at the Hammersay House Hotel.
Hebrides International Film Festival
3rd week August
HIFF shows films, usually on a maritime, island or environmental theme, in various venues in North Uist - Berneray, Lochmaddy and Carinish. The programme includes documentaries - national and international, new box office hits, directors talks and workshops. Tickets can be booked online.
Art Courses in North Uist
The Art School at Lews Castle College, UHI, offers both full and part time courses in Art and Design as well as short course options. Based at the Arts Centre in Lochmaddy, students can study from introductory to degree level. Short courses are offered in a range of subjects including drawing, photography, printmaking and painting.
